FRED is not only a CO2 calculator for calculating the CO2 footprint of products or companies. Companies can also use it to conceptualise their individual decarbonisation strategy. And it was developed especially for foundries.
The Federal Association of the German Foundry Industry (BDG), as a founding member and shareholder of FRED GmbH, is continuously working to ensure that the CO2 calculation tool is tailored to the processes in a foundry. The last update was released at the end of August, and the advisory board met in mid-September to discuss ideas for further optimisation of the tool. But FRED is already fully ready for use and foundries. The programme can be ordered at www.fred-footprint.de. A live demo as well as user consultations and user meetings support users in the application.
Based on the individually determined carbon footprint, foundries can build up the entire strategy for decarbonising their companies. The Corporate Carbon Footprint (CCF) makes visible at which point in the production process the most CO2 is generated. Its balancing and comparability of fictitious scenarios (e.g. use of green electricity instead of the usual electricity mix) identify the most effective levers for reducing CO2 emissions. A secondary database with key industrial data provides benchmarks for the company's own primary data and temporarily bridges data gaps until the company's own data is available.
FRED GmbH 2022 was founded by the supplier associations BDG, WSM, DSV, ESV, IMU, TecPart and VDFI with the aim of actively offering customers a certified CO2 calculation tool. In discussions with the relevant associations and companies, FRED has now been established. Since April, the tool has been a member of the automotive OEM data platform Catena-X. The tool's methodology for calculating PCF and CCF is validated according to DIN EN ISO 14067 and 14064. This is shown on each calculated CO2 footprint.
